The 12 brazen female musicians in Mediaeval Baebes have kept their vivacious demeanors on Undrentide, the follow-up to 1999's Worldes Blysse. Undrentide features production work from John Cale, yet the sound direction is a bit tacky compared to previous material. Former Miranda Sex Garden frontwoman Katherine Blake leads this British troupe into soundscapes of electronica and hums of orchestral backdrops. However, Undrentide is too distracting with its newly twinged intent. The usual sultry harmonies are there, but obviously different with shades of funk and soul. It's not classic Mediaeval Baebes, and Cale's ambition may have been a bit overshadowed by his own avant-garde material. Nonetheless, the Mediaeval Baebes are sophisticated in their own right and dynamic as always, but Undrentide's style is not the same.
